Who is this for?

Who is this for?

This page is for you if you are recovering from knee surgery and want clarity about what you can do, how strength returns and how to trust your knee again.

We guide recovery after procedures such as ACL reconstruction, meniscus surgery and total or partial knee replacement. If your surgeon or hospital has given you a rehabilitation protocol, we align the plan with it.

Symptoms

Why rehabilitation after knee surgery matters

What you notice

  • Regaining knee mobility step by step.
  • Rebuilding the muscles around your knee, especially your thigh.
  • Restoring balance and stability.
  • Building confidence to move, train and live the way you want.

After surgery your knee is vulnerable. The muscles around the joint are weaker, mobility is limited and your body has become cautious. Without proper guidance, the knee can stay stiff, strength may not fully return or you may compensate with other parts of your body.

Causes

Rehabilitation after different types of knee surgery

Each operation needs its own pace and approach. After an ACL reconstruction, rehabilitation often takes months and focuses on strength, stability and confidence. After meniscus surgery, the plan depends on whether the meniscus was repaired or partly removed. After knee replacement, the emphasis is on mobility, strength and smooth daily function.

That is why we do not start with a standard exercise list. We look at your operation, the protocol from your surgeon, your current capacity and the goal you want to reach.

The trap

Why knee rehabilitation often gets stuck

Many people get stuck between moving too cautiously and doing too much too soon. As a result, full extension or bending may not return well, thigh strength stays behind or confidence does not grow with what the knee can already tolerate.

Knee surgery recovery needs phases: first mobility and control, then strength, and only after that the movements you need for work, daily life or sport. If you skip steps, recovery becomes unnecessarily uncertain.

Our approach

How we treat this at BeyondPhysio

Rehabilitation after knee surgery takes time and structured strength building. Our sessions last 45 to 60 minutes, so there is room to practise properly. Because BeyondPhysio and the BeyondFit training facilities are under one roof, we bridge the gap between recovery and real strength.

This page is a deeper topic within physiotherapy after surgery.

Restore mobility and control.

In the first phase we focus on reducing swelling, restoring bending and extension and activating your muscles again.

Rebuild strength.

Once the foundation is there, we strengthen your thigh, glutes and trunk. This is where many people plateau without proper guidance.

Return to function and sport.

In the final phase we train the movements you need in daily life or sport: stairs, jumping, turning, accelerating and braking.

What you can do

What you can do yourself

Bring the operation or rehabilitation protocol from your surgeon or hospital to your first appointment. That helps us match your load and exercises to what is appropriate for your phase.

You will find us at Tweede Kostverlorenkade 130HS, close to Oud-West, De Baarsjes and Kinkerstraat. The practice is easy to reach, also when your mobility is still limited.

Result

What you get back

Your knee feels stronger, more stable and more reliable. You know what to do in each phase and why, and you build step by step back towards movement, work, sport and daily life with confidence.

Waiting costs recovery

What waiting costs you

Without targeted rehabilitation, your knee may stay stiff, strength can return less completely and you may unconsciously compensate with your hip, ankle or back. The longer that pattern remains, the bigger the step back to normal movement becomes.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

When can I start physiotherapy after my operation?

That depends on the type of surgery and your surgeon’s advice. Rehabilitation often starts shortly after the procedure. Contact us and we can discuss what is sensible in your situation.

How long does rehabilitation take?

This varies strongly per operation. Recovery after a meniscus procedure can be quicker, while ACL reconstruction usually takes several months. During the assessment we give you a realistic timeline.

Do you work with my surgeon or hospital?

We are happy to follow the rehabilitation protocol you received and adapt our approach to it.

Do I need a referral?

Physiotherapy usually does not require a referral. For reimbursement from basic Dutch health insurance in certain conditions, a referral may be useful. We help you check what applies to you.

Insurance & trust

Book your assessment

Physiotherapy after surgery is often covered by supplementary Dutch health insurance. In certain conditions, longer-term physiotherapy may also be reimbursed from basic insurance after a defined number of treatments. We work with insurers including Achmea, CZ, Zorg en Zekerheid, Multizorg VRZ, VGZ and Zilveren Kruis.
