Who is this for?

Who is this for?

This page is for you if lifting your arm, reaching overhead, lying on your shoulder or training upper body has become painful.

You want more than temporary relief. You want to understand what keeps irritating the shoulder and what needs to change.

Symptoms

You probably recognise this

What you notice

  • Pain on the outside or front of the shoulder.
  • Pain when reaching overhead, putting on a jacket or lying on the shoulder.
  • A painful arc when lifting the arm.
  • Temporary relief after rest, followed by the same irritation when you use the arm again.

A bursa can become sensitive when the shoulder is repeatedly loaded without enough strength, control or recovery.

Causes

How shoulder bursitis develops

Shoulder bursitis is often related to repeated overhead movement, sudden increases in training or work load, reduced shoulder blade control, stiffness in the upper back or weakness around the rotator cuff.

The bursa is not usually the whole problem. It is often the structure that complains because the shoulder system is not sharing load well.

The trap

Why it keeps coming back

Only resting the shoulder can calm pain, but it does not build the capacity needed for daily life or sport.

If shoulder blade control, rotator cuff strength and workload are not addressed, the same irritation returns as soon as you use the shoulder more.

Our approach

How we treat this at BeyondPhysio

We combine hands-on physiotherapy where useful with targeted exercise therapy for shoulder mobility, rotator cuff strength and load management.

Assess the shoulder system.

We test movement, strength, painful positions and the way your shoulder blade and upper back contribute.

Calm the irritated tissue.

We reduce pain and sensitivity with treatment, advice and temporary load changes.

Rebuild capacity.

We train rotator cuff strength, shoulder blade control and overhead tolerance step by step.

What you can do

What you can do yourself

Avoid repeatedly provoking sharp pain overhead for a short period, but do not immobilise the shoulder. Gentle pain-free movement, light strength work and temporary training adjustments usually help more than complete rest.

Seek medical advice if pain follows a fall, you cannot lift the arm, symptoms are severe at night or you have clear loss of strength.

Result

What you get back

A shoulder you can trust again: reaching, lifting, sleeping and training without constantly protecting the arm.

Waiting costs recovery

What waiting costs you

If you keep provoking the shoulder without changing the cause, irritation can become more persistent and your movement pattern becomes increasingly protective.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

When should I see a physiotherapist for shoulder bursitis?

If shoulder bursitis lasts longer than expected, keeps returning, limits work, sleep, sport or daily movement, an assessment is sensible. We check whether physiotherapy is the right care and refer you when medical evaluation is needed.

Do I need a referral?

No. Physiotherapy in the Netherlands is directly accessible. You can book an assessment without seeing your GP first.

How many sessions will I need?

That depends on your complaint, history and goals. After the assessment you receive a clear recovery plan with a realistic timeline.

Do you treat English-speaking clients?

Yes. Our physiotherapists speak English and regularly treat internationals and expats in Amsterdam West.

Should I completely rest my shoulder?

Usually no. A short reduction in painful load can help, but the shoulder needs progressive movement and strength to recover well.

Can shoulder bursitis return?

Yes, especially when the underlying load, strength or movement pattern is not addressed. That is why we train the cause, not only the painful tissue.
