Who is this for?

Who is this for?

You train because you are moving towards something: a race, a personal best, a new season or simply the freedom to move well. You may have an injury, but you may also be stuck on a training plateau, dealing with recurring niggles or unsure whether your body is keeping up with the load you give it.

This page is for you if you want guidance that goes beyond the painful spot. We help runners, padel players, racket and team-sport athletes, strength athletes and other active people understand their capacity, train with purpose and return to sport with confidence.

Symptoms

When sports physiotherapy is right for you

What you notice

  • You have an injury and want to return not only pain-free, but safely to full sporting load.
  • A recurring complaint keeps interrupting training or matches despite rest or isolated exercises.
  • You have reached a plateau in strength, speed, mobility or recovery and want to find the limiting link.
  • You are starting a new sport, training method or competition build-up and want to prevent overload.

Sports physiotherapy is not only for an acute injury. It is about the match between your body and the demands of your sport: which movements, forces, speed, repetitions and recovery periods do you need to tolerate to keep performing well?

Causes

Why active people need more than treatment alone

Your body does not need the same capacity for a walk or workday as it does for a sprint, smash, squat, tackle or long run. Yet recovery is often judged by daily activities. A complaint may appear resolved while strength, speed, coordination or confidence are still not ready for sport.

Sporting load is shaped by training volume, intensity, technique, recovery, sleep, previous injuries and the capacity of your muscles, tendons and joints. When demand rises faster than capacity, a weak link appears. Testing and targeted training show where it is and how to strengthen it.

The trap

Why standard treatment is not enough

The common trap is waiting until pain disappears and then doing exactly what you did before. A pain-free day does not prove that your body can handle repeated sprints, heavy sets, cutting or overhead strokes. Without intermediate steps, you jump from too little load to too much and trigger another setback.

A random list of exercises does not automatically create a sport-ready body either. You need to train what your sport demands, at the right intensity and in the right order. Hands-on treatment can help temporarily, but lasting progress comes from growing your capacity and learning to dose your load.

Our approach

How we treat this at BeyondPhysio

We guide you between complaint and sporting goal. We know you are not coming to physiotherapy to stay cautious forever, but to do what matters to you again. That is why we work with one consistent therapist, 45 to 60 minute sessions and a direct link to the BeyondFit Amsterdam training environment.

If you have a clear injury, read more about physiotherapy for sports injuries. If your focus is general physical improvement, our performance and mobility programme is a natural next step.

Make your sporting goal concrete.

We discuss your sport, training week, previous injuries, current complaint and goal. Then we assess how you move, where your strength and mobility are and which loads are not yet well tolerated.

Test where the opportunity lies.

We use targeted tests for strength, control, mobility and capacity. This creates a baseline and shows which factors deserve priority instead of relying on feel alone.

Train towards your next level.

You receive a progressive programme connected to your sport. We move from foundation load towards the movements, speed, intensity and repetitions you need for your training, competition or next goal.

What you can do

What you can do yourself

Track not only whether you have pain, but also how much you trained and how your body responds later that day and the next morning. A training log shows when load rises too quickly. Plan hard sessions deliberately and allow enough recovery between demanding efforts.

A good warm-up prepares you, but it does not replace gradual progression. Do not increase duration, weight, speed and match intensity all at once. A sudden injury with a snap, major swelling, clear loss of strength or inability to bear weight requires medical assessment.

Result

What you get back

You train with a clearer understanding of what your body can handle. You know how to build towards sprinting, cutting, hitting, lifting or endurance load, recognise overload signals earlier and feel confident practising your sport again. Not because you never feel a niggle, but because you know how to respond.

Waiting costs recovery

What waiting costs you

If you keep alternating between overly cautious training and suddenly going all out, your capacity stays behind your ambition. Recurring complaints can gradually reduce your training rhythm, enjoyment and confidence. A targeted build-up takes attention, but gives you a much more reliable route towards your sporting goal.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

What is sports physiotherapy?

Sports physiotherapy is physiotherapy tailored to the demands of your sport. Alongside treating complaints, we look at strength, mobility, control, speed, training load and recovery, so you can return safely or improve your capacity with purpose.

Do I need an injury for sports physiotherapy?

No. You can also come for prevention, guidance during a training build-up, a recurring minor complaint or a performance plateau. We identify what load you can handle and which capacity you can improve.

What is the difference between sports physiotherapy and physiotherapy for sports injuries?

Physiotherapy for sports injuries focuses mainly on an existing complaint and its rehabilitation. Sports physiotherapy is broader and also includes prevention, sports-specific testing, training guidance and capacity building when you are not injured.

Which sports can you help with?

We work with runners, padel players, racket and team-sport athletes, strength athletes, CrossFitters, cyclists and people who perform repeated overhead movements. The key is not the sport label, but the load and movements you need to tolerate.

Can I keep training during rehabilitation?

Often yes, but the content and dose may need temporary changes. We decide which movements you can keep, which stimuli need adjustment and how to return step by step to the full demands of your sport.

How many sessions will I need?

That depends on your goal, complaint, starting level and sporting demands. After the assessment we discuss the logical next steps. Sometimes a short programme with testing and a plan is enough; an injury may require a longer progression.

Do I need a referral and is sports physiotherapy covered?

You do not need a referral to start. For many people, physiotherapy is covered through supplementary Dutch health insurance, depending on the policy. We help you check what applies to you before you begin.
